It starts with a group of very smart, very concerned people who shared one fear: that if powerful AI was only built by profit-driven companies, it might not be built with humanity’s best interests in mind.

In December 2015, a group of technology leaders — including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, and others — pooled together $1 billion and founded OpenAI as a non-profit. Their stated mission was simple: “Ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.” Not shareholders. Humanity.

AI can’t read words — only numbers. So your sentence gets broken into chunks called “tokens” (roughly one token per word) and each one gets converted into a long string of numbers. “Hello” becomes something like [0.23, -0.81, 0.44, 0.62…] across thousands of dimensions. This is called an “embedding” — it encodes not just the word, but its meaning and relationship to other words.

Your numbers get passed through 96 layers of mathematical processing — each layer looking at your input from a different angle, focusing on different aspects of meaning. One layer might focus on grammar, another on subject matter, another on tone. This is the “neural network” — 175 billion parameters all doing their small part. The whole process takes milliseconds.

Here’s the key insight: ChatGPT doesn’t “think up” a full answer and then type it. It predicts one word at a time. Given everything you said and everything it’s said so far, what’s the most sensible next word? Then it uses that word to predict the next one, and so on. It’s like very sophisticated autocomplete — except the “autocomplete” has read more text than any human ever could.

What Went Wrong — The Honest Part
